It makes molecules (ATP and NADPH) that the plants can then use to make carbohydrates. Carbon dioxide is used as a source of carbon for the carbohydrates. Plants can use the initial carbohydrates to make starch, sucrose, and some other carbohydrates. Molecular oxygen is a byproduct.

Water from the roots are decomposed to give free electrons as well as the Oxygen byproduct.
Carbon dioxide from the atmosphere combines with the leftover Hydrogen from the decomposed water to make glucose.
