I'm preparing to present a new course to my district to engage older students (from 8th grade to 10th grade) in reading. What books do you remember from reading at that age that you really enjoyed? What books have you read now that you think would be appropriate? The books below I'm thinking of using.... (Please remember I need to appeal to both girls and guys!!)

THANKS!

Books for 8th-10th graders:
"The Great Gatsby" - Fitzgerald
"Catcher in the Rye" - Salinger
"A Solitary Blue" - Voigt
"Black Boy" - Wright
"The Diary of Anne Frank" - Frank
"Go Ask Alice"- Anon.
"Shades of Simon Gray" - MacDonald

What do you guys think of "Go Ask Alice" for 8th - 10th graders? I've just started reading it myself and I fear that it's goign to become too graphic and religiously centered for school.... Has anyone an opinion on this? THANKS, and as always, I welcome new books!

I read "The Outsiders" and hated it, but it works.
I'm not sure on "Go Ask Alice" for 8th graders. It's a little graphic, but with the times we are in, they may handle it better than you might expect.

"Cirque Du Freak" by Darren Shan would be a fun one. Plus, it would launch them into the whole series and might encourage them to read more.
"Eragon" by Christopher Paolini would be another good one.
"Gathering Blue", "The Messenger", and "The Giver" by Lois Lowry are amazing.
"Blind Faith" by Ellen Wittlinger, though it does contain religion.
"The Book Thief" by Markus Zuzac is rather lengthy, but a great look into the Holocaust.
"Green Angel" by Alice Hoffman (just to be warned, it contains self mutilation)
"Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation" by MT Anderson is lovely.
And "The Shadow Children" series by Margaret Peterson Haddix is also great.

Just don't give them "A Tale of Two Cities", I was forced to read that and remember HATING it so much. :]

I hope that helped!
