I dont think a mind can go unchallenged, it is the motor of all concious action that animals and people undertake. They are constantly confronted by the perils and challenges of the social world and world around them.
People constantly use complex systems to analyse things that are important to them like the way man is challenged by the politics of football or a woman by emotional politics... ( I know these are stereotypes but are just used illustrate a point). Even socially isolated people build complex thought systems in to analyse there social situation often leading to depression.
I think the source of ideas like this is that the a minds "challenges". but Its vibrancy and complexity might become less socially relevant to people. because they do not share the other persons. These people percieve this as decay as there knowlegde of a particular are or set of areas this person considers important might recede
