False.

The United States gained Independence in 1776.

Edit: The Treaty of Paris was just when Britain formally recognized our independence, but I celebrate our Independence day on July 4th with the rest of America.

Although they may have gained independence in 1776, the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783 and formally ended the war.

Key points (from Wikipedia)

* United States will prevent future confiscations of the property of Loyalists [Article 6];
* Prisoners of war on both sides are to be released and all property left by the British army in the United States unmolested (including slaves) [Article 7];
