Kids won't even know what Cessna means (most adults won't, for that matter), so it's highly unlikely she'll be bothered with annoying comments until she's older, and by that time she'll be able to shrug it off.
But it means something to you...that's what counts. And personally, I think it's a really pretty name for a girl...even though I know what a Cessna is, I wouldn't automatically envision your daughter with wings the minute I found out her name.

I wouldn't call it either torture (there are far worse names out there) OR cute (after all, what's "cute" about being named after the vehicle your grandfather died in?).
Were it simply the aviation aspect that appealed, and it weren't the actual sort of plane involved in Grampa's death, it wouldn't be terrible. But in this case, I might opt to use something like Cecilia Naomi, Cecily Diana or Frances Natalia, with Cessna as a nickname (so she doesn't HAVE to use it if she one day finds the connection too uncomfortable). Or even opt for a less literal nod to Dad and Grandad's passion, such as Amelia (for Ms. Earhart, of course!). Just some thoughts. ;)

Great idea (to put such thought into your baby's name), but as far as 'made-up' or 'kre8ative' names go, I think this is one of the worser ones. The 'Cess' just reminds of of a 'cesspool' - that was really the first thing that popped into my head.
You could always use either other similar names or other aviation themed names: Cassidy/Cassia/Cassie, Celia, Seeley, Vanessa/Van/Ness, Francesca, Sienna, Aura/Rory, Journey, Avery (reminds of aviation lol, though it probably has nothing to do with it), etc. You could even give her a middle name that's strongly aviation themed - this might sound weird, but I actually think a middle name like Pilot would be adorable lol. It shouldn't affect her too much - as a middle name, which no one really has to know unless she tells them, it's so much better than naming her Pilot Inspektor or something lol. Pair it with a more normal name though, to balance it out - like Avery Pilot would be really pretty (to me, anyway lol).
Good luck and congrats on the baby girl!!

I wouldn't say torture but it's a lame reason to pick that name.
Pick a nice name for her and buy a nice framed Cessna logo to honor your father in law.

I say it is torture! No one will no how to say it, or those who do will know you named her after an airplane. As a child she will never be able to find stuff with her name on it. So while all of her little friends have pretty pencils with their names on them, she will get ugly yellow ones! My husband is a pilot too, and I would never let him name a child after an airplane! Maybe the dog! What was you father in laws name, you may be able to get something out of that! My sons middle name is Brien, because O'Brien was my grandmothers maiden name! You can have more fun with a middle name, but a first name a child has to use for life!!

It's torture. It's odd enough to name your child after a plane, and it's weird to name a child after the vehicle her grandfather died in. That has got to be bad luck.
It wouldn't be a hateful middle name, but I absolutely wouldn't use it as a first name. Why not Ava, Araceli, or Bernoulli (j/k) instead?

Get a dog and name it Cessna. That's a really BAD choice.
I bet her gandfather would not be thrilled with this choice of name for his granddaughter. Can you honor him in some other way? For instance, use the feminine form of his name for your daughter.

Well, ask yourself this- do you think it's wrong to give her a name that is going to make people say "Cessna? Like the plane?" about once a week for the rest of her life?
Think about it, and then decide for yourself. I wouldn't do it. She's a girl, not a plane.

It's on that questionable line. Maybe if you want to honor the father you use a variation of his name. . .or a variation on the name of the place where he had to make that emergency landing.
