The reason moms do that is because babies develop so quickly that there's a big difference between a 4 week old baby and an 8 week old baby. And there's a huge difference between a 14 month old and an 18 month old, even though they're both technically 1. I stopped saying my son's age in weeks and started saying it in months when we was around 3 months old. I stopped saying his age in months when he turned 2. Now I just say he's 2.

I don't know if there is a magic number. I stopped saying "weeks" after they were 8 weeks or 2 months. I stopped saying "months" after they were 2 years. I remember saying 18 months, but I never said 24 months I said 2.

I agree Kat. We did weeks with my daughter until about 2 months (then we kind of lost track of weeks, and went to months)
I also remember 18 months, but at 2 years, we started going by year, occasionally throwing in 'she's just turned 2' or 'she's 2 1/2 or 'almost 3'. Now at 4 years old, it doesn't seem to matter as much (she is now about 225 weeks : )

When you can no longer quickly calculate how many months or weeks old they are, it's time to start using years. Usually at 3 months or so, you stop using "weeks" and at 2 years, you stop using "months."

After about 2 yrs...
The thing is, in their development they change so much from week to week and things sort of slow down after 2 1/2 yrs or so. Those little things don't even smile at 4 days and are playing after 8-10 weeks!
So, parental instinct sort of splits their age into weeks- for about two years...
Weird, but it works for another parent who went through it to understand where the "14 week old" is in his development...

i think after 2 years old, they go by halves..."3 1/2....4....4 1/2...etc
Weeks?? I'd say 12 weeks....after that it's just annoying because the asker has to mentally calculate how old the baby is.
