Individuals do use their investments to promote their own ends such as the owners of Cable Vision, Murdok's News Corp., BUT countries have less of an investment return incentive and more of a idealogical motive. These countries may even be less friends or enemies of ours later. There is also industrial espionage problems

How does the GOP manage to convince its base election after election to vote this philosophy into effect? How do republicans deny the truth in that report? How is shorting a stock good for the average investor in a 401 or some other retirement plan holding mutual funds. How is obscene compensation for failed CEO's policies many of which cross the lines of being morally and ethically acceptable, acceptable? There is no free market, by the time joe blow gets home from work and checks his stocks, the big boys work has been done and he's left holding the losses. Look at the current mess with banking, the airlines, credit and housing. Is it a coincidence that all these industries are getting killed at the same time? This started with Nixon, went through Reagan and will end with our president. The complete encouragement of this administration to allow any kind of business practices with no threat of intervention or oversight. A green light to rape the economy and their greed is so great they couldn't stop themselves even at the expense of our country collapsing.

Y E S, American People should be concerned about foreign countries buying American Companies, but you will NOT find anyone in this country who are even remotely interested in your question because these people DO NOT understand the New Free Market Trend that is going on, and BTW, this has nothing to do with who is the President of the USA!!

I'm not sure if it makes a huge difference if a country is buying a company rather than an individual, since in either case the incentive schemes are the same, which is profit.
In that sense, investment groups from other countries have purchased US companies for a long time now. In fact, our country has many incredibly large investments from China and Japan.
If you've ever been steeped in the culture of investment you might not be so worried. When large groups invest money in something, they don't care about the ethics of the company as long as it gives returns.

Your point that the "idealogical motive" comes more into play (versus the profit motive) is a good one; as well as the fact that they are probably MORE likely to move every possible operation to either their homeland or the cheapest country possible, all at the expense, from a world viewpoint, of civil rights, child labor and safety standards, etc. It's hard to quantify but this has to be a bad trend; definitely not in our best interests.

Yes, and it should not be allowed. Look at the way we trade with China. They sent up poisons, and we sent then Our Jobs and Money. This is also true with Mexico and other Countries.
This is a STUPID way to be doing Business. The only way we we be going, by continuing in this manner. is into bankruptcy!
