Oh man, this question strikes a nerve with me. NO I DO NOT feel you have to route for a team in your local area. I'm a transplant to Memphis from Cincinnati and all I hear about is the SEC and the University of Memphis Basketball. When I lived in Cincinnati, Bob Huggins Bearcats would kick the crap out of Memphis and I knew it was a big rivalry, but other than that, I never knew much of the sports scene here. I get ALL kinds of crap for being an Ohio State fan (& alumni) and for liking the Bengals and the Cincinnati Reds.... I'm ok with it though because those are the teams that I have ALWAYS liked and I'm not going to change just because I'm now in the severe minority. I deal with the blind ignorrence of being "different" here every single time I go to a Buffalo Wild Wings to watch any of my teams..... Doesn't bother me a bit!!

I am conflicted about this question. You dont have to root for your local team but you cant be a jack *** either. I hate posers that root for the best teams every year. You have to have team loyalty and you have to FOLLOW that team. Black out rules narrow you down to just one game a week. Unless you have sattellite you are not even watching any of the games. Dont tell me you are a Pats fan or a Colts fan when you havent watched a game? And how many Red Sox fans were there 5 years ago?
I root local but i could not imagine changing my team if i ever moved. I would still root for the teams i grew up with

No. Absoultely not. I'm a Browns fan and I have been ever since I was little. I live right on the border of Michigan...mile-wise, I'm much closer to Detroit and not Cleveland. I don't like the Lions.

Same thing w/ college football. Geographically speaking, U of M and MSU are much closer than The Ohio State University, but the Buckeyes are my team. (always have been and always will be - no matter where life takes me).

No. People move all the time and just because they do, they should not abandon a team they haved loved for years just to root for the team in their new city.

I think it's ridiculous that a lot people believe you not only should, but HAVE TO, root for the teams in your area. I mean, I'm in PA and I do hope the PA teams win, but I don't root for any of the college teams (WVU fan).

Whatever team you like/love, wear their colors proudly...but remember (as I tell myself when I go to Philly with my friends who are NY Giant Fans)....no team is worth getting shot over.

No, some people would be stuck rooting for pathetic teams. It should be freedom of choice, and it is. How would there ever be NFL Fans Nationwide if that werent the case? Not every state has an NFL team.

I like this question, 1st of all. Secondly, I have noticed that if you live in the area of a team, everyone EXPECTS you to be a fan of that cities team. But, NO.....to each his own, but if you live in Pittsburgh and wear a Ravens jersey, expect people to beat you down with a terrible towel.

Nope. That's why you have Giants fans in Philly. Cowboys fans in Philly. Redskins fans in Philly. Etc.

I live in VA right now - aint no way I root for the Redskins. I have no respect for them. I have no respect for Gibbs. I have respect for Dan Snyder. I refuse to root for the skins. I grew up in New England - I only care for the Patriots. But also like the Eagles cause I lived there and they grew on me.

But if you are a fan, you root for whomever you are a fan of. Not based on where you live.

no
but I get it all the time....
I always hear "how can you like Penn State, you live in Ohio"

Homerism is usually fine with me....although that usually leads to ignorance

but I don't understand the rules....
Let's say a guy lives in Toledo Ohio....
he's an Ohio State fan because he lives in Ohio
even though Michigan State, and obviously U of Toledo are both closer geographically to him

you ask why he isn't a Michigan State fan, it's because "he lives in Ohio"
you ask why he isn't a Toledo fan....it's because "he doesn't know"
or if he'll admit it, "Ohio State will always be better"
