You have one or two IP addresses depending upon your setup.

If you connect directly to the Internet via a modem, you have only one IP address, and it is provided by your ISP and you can't change it.

If you connect with a router which is connected to your modem, you have the IP address your ISP provided, and a private IP address the routers DHCP service provides.

With the router providing your private IP address you have two choices:

You can simply allow the router to give out the first available IP address as you connect to the net, or whenever you boot your system up, which is called a Dynamic private IP address.

If you need a Static IP address, you need to find out what your Private IP address range is, select one further up the line, so that it will not interfer with the routers giving out the dynamic addresses, and then go into your connections properties as outlined above, and enter the information.

You right click on the connection icon in your notification area, select Open Network Connections, right click on the conection and select properties.

Now on the first tab, highlight Internet Protocol TCP/IP and select Properties.

In the box which appears, select the radial dial in front of: Use the following IP address, and fill in the correct information. You will need the IP address you decided upon, the subnet mask and the Default gateway address. The Default Gateway address is the same as your routers IP address.

Down at the bottom the radial dial for Use the following DNS Server addresses will already have been selected for you when you clicked on Use the following IP Address radial button. You will need to enter the correct information here, which is also usually the routers IP address, and then one number higher at the very end for the second DNS address, like this, 1. 192.168.1.1, then for the second one: 192.168.1.2

To find out the information you need to set a Static address, do this:

Start-Run and type in: cmd and hit Enter, and command prompt will open, now type in: ipconfig /all. Note that there is a space between ipconfig and /all. That space is important. Information will now scroll down the window.

Your subnet mask, default gateway, will all be listed here.

Now, to find out what the range of Private IP addressses you can select from, all you need to know is the IP address of your router, which is the same as the Default Gateway. If your Default Gateway address is: 192.168.1.1 and you have two computers on your network, they will have IP addresses like this: 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3. Decide if you will add computers to your network, or if friends and family will come over and use your connection. Add up how many may do so at the same time, and then go ten IP addresses higher than that, to ensure no duplicate IP address will be assigned by the router. I use 192.168.2.15 for my Static IP address on my Windows Home Servers connection.

Good luck and if you have any issues just access the Help and Support in your system. It is full of information which will help you configure your network.

Well you can't, it's provided by your isp.

What you can do to hide it is:
Use free proxy servers ( if you search for free proxy servers on Google, you'll find what you need )
or buy a program that will change your IP (same process of going thru a proxy)

Your ip address is most likly "Dynamic" which means it changes every time you connect to the net, to change it (for whatever reason" unplug your telephone cable and plug it back in again.
