I just read in the news that the mother of the Omaha mall shooter apologized. What that is indeed a nice gesture, I think that he and only HE should be made accountable for his actions. What do the rest of you think...should parents be held responsible when adult children break the law?

Parent's fault? To one extent or another, a lot of what we are or who we are is due to our parents. If they can take some of the credit for how they raise us, they also deserve some of the blame.

Accountability is a different issue- adults are considered accountable for their own actions and only rarely should parents be be held accountable for the actions of adult children- mostly when a contract allows it, or if the adult child is incompetent for some reason (disability or handicap, for example.)

Should the parent apologize? 'Should' is a tricky word here. Some parents will feel the need to, some will not.

As an Omahan, I am aware that it is all too easy to judge his mom, or point fingers at school, the system, etc., but in the end- this was his decision.

If we had a different government system I would say Yes, but with our system the way it is now No. Let's exam. A child miss behaves in public and the parent corrects him or her, next thing that happens, DCS (Demonic Claws of Satan) are putting them in handcuffs and caring them to court, children go to live with a stranger. Next child stands up un class and tells the teacher (Go to h***, I don't have to listen to you), teacher puts the child out of class. Next thing that happens, Police are at the school to arrest teacher, for upsetting child and pat child on back and tell them everything will be okay. And we wonder about our Children. WOW!

In some cases, yes. If parents do monitor their children, let them live with friends, knowing they suffer from mental issues and are unable to monitor their acitivies and they go and commit murder, they do hold some responsibility.

If my kid grabs my husband's assault rifle from the closet and kills people, my husband is partially to blame for having it accessible, knowing they have a family member who is mentally ill.
