Psychology has contributed to society in that it has given people mental aid and support in dealing with life's problems without the use of drugs, as you need to be a psychiatrist a licensed MD to prescribe drugs.
Psychology when used properly can give you the knowledge, skills and ability to handle stressful situations. Psychologist may be able to explain behavior and in many cases help people overcome fears.
Psychology has helped change people's behavioral issues with anger, phobias, fear, anxiety and just going through difficult times. While it's focus is on person to person it benefits society by making more people willing and able to deal with society on a more positive basis.

By studying thoughts, emotions and behaviors, the field has fought against the common notion that people are either simply good or bad. Health includes what goes on in our brains, and how we influence our own lives by our thoughts and decisions. Moving beyond the simple Good vs. Evil framework for individuals fosters compassion and understanding, reducing stigma, hatred, bigotry and violence.

Also, the first responder is confusing psychology with psychiatry. Those are different fields with different objectives.

Don't worry about it. Psychologists are highly trained individuals who want to help their fellow man. They're not for macho men like you who have it all figured out.

When you get another horrible bj, stick with bartenders for advice.

It encourages thoughtful introspection. But I wouldn't go much further. Studies have shown that time does just as much good as therapy.

I think it has begun to show us where we can be in control of ourselves, and where we are powerless against ourselves.
