I broke my ankle a week ago and was told by doctors to keep all my weight off it and keep it elevated. When its not elevated, like when I use crutches, the blood pressure builds and it becomes painful for a while. (There was surgery involved to fix it.) How long will this elevation go on for? Will I ever be able to put my foot down without it hurting? It's been a week, and it's not much better.

The swelling in the ankle after surgery is normal and could last anywhere from 3-6months. You should keep it up while at rest until the break heals which is usually btw 6-8weeks. It's normal to feel throbbing when you put the foot down. Why? The blood is rushing down in the foot and being in a cast, you're not using your calf muscle to pump the fluid back up so it'll swell until the break heals and until you're cleared to put weight on it again. Once you do, the swelling will quickly go away along with physical therapy as your calf muscle regains its tone. Be patient - you're on your way to healing. Hope this helps!

I did not need to have plates in my foot such as you did however I have damaged my ankle. My harm for really a while and I was once advised to hold it accelerated while it harm and for the primary week or so. If it factors ache lift it but when it does not then simply do not. When mine did not harm I simply stretched it out and permit it grasp within the part. Also to your crutches like I did you'll positioned socks on the grounds that the crutches I had had been particularly demanding they stored on making my fingers enormously sore.

It could take anywhere from 2-4 weeks and then still be tender for a while after that. Are you still putting ice on it? Ice helps reduce swelling and inflamation, 20 min on and 40 min off when possible.
