The Republican Party has been hijacked by religious fundamentalists (the "Moral" Minority) to the point that moderates and secular, fiscal conservatives have been relegated to the sidelines. Instead of professing Republican ideals of personal responsibility and restraint, they have adopted a platform based on control and an antiquated form of "decency."
Personally, I'm sick of candidates blindly pandering their faith in order to appeal to an extremist fringe of society that could care less about freedom for all and "loving thy neighbor." Instead, these religious fanatics see democracy as merely a means, not the ends, to achieving their theocratic ambitions.

Yes, we have had enough of that with Bush, however, I am curious to know with what religion a candidate is affiliated because it defines a lot of who they are and where they stand on issues that matter. For example, Obama is of the UCC religion - progressive and on the leading edge of environmental concerns. A southern Baptist (Clinton being an exception) would be prone to an anti-abortion mindset, etc. Ideally, religion should not enter into politics but I have seen over and over people using religion to push their political views, and realistically, religion & politics are intertwined.

Actually most Americans don't care as much as the politicians do. In most polls it shows economy and war are more important to American voters than the religious beliefs of the leaders. However, the conservatives want to show who is the most conservative and they, for some reason, think that involves being very religious because most of our prior conservative leaders were religious and outspoken. JFK, on the other hand, made a clear seperation of church and state and is revered for being one of the greatest Presidents so I don't think it earns them many votes to be so outspoken.

And Mike Huckabee is against abortion but for the death penalty, so we know he's a real double talker. I can't wait for the day a candidate will stand up and say I'm an athiest and these are my beliefs, they will have my vote!

I'd like to know what a Republican will do with his religion after he's elected. I'd rather see someone who can straighten out the messes we are in with SS, war, health, education. Going to church is not a problem. We all can do that, but we can't fix the other stuff.

No religion shouldn't be brought up look at Bush a "Born again in hell boy! I don't think a Muslim should be in though like Obama that is just sure maddness. As for repukes being far from anything other than Christians from what I see Christians do believe in "Thou shall not kill" so they are far from being Christians

Not that I don't think its a little overdone, but I don't think you can fairly accuse Republicans of doing that without taking into account that Democrats do it as well. Bill Clinton for example made tons of press from going to his pastor for help and constantly consulting him. When we get into the primary, I'd bet any taker that the Democrat will do exactly the same thing.
