My friends have all asked me to do alterations -- ONCE. I tell them in no uncertain terms that I don't do alterations. It's not easy and not fun. Your friend is a cheapskate and doesn't want to pay someone to do the work for them. If you do want to learn how to do it, I recommend this book

Learn to say NO! Alterations are not the same as creating clothes etc from scratch. One tip though, if the pants have a centre back seam which continues on up through the waistband, you can take in up to about 2 inches. By opening the back seam and stitching all the way up through the waistband, and tapering the seam down towards the crotch until you are back to the original seam. You can then open the excess fabric and press flat, then fold down the waistband and stitch in place. Hope this makes sense!

If you have never done it before, I would suggest he take the pants to an alterationist. Taking in the waist is very time consuming. As the other poster suggested, it involves taking off the waistband and re-stitching the seams. Putting a seam in the waistband is also time consuming because there is usually top stitching which would have to be ripped out and redone; if there are belt loops, these sometimes are in the way and also have to be taken off. I
f you decide to do it, make sure you charge him plenty for your time....it's not an "easy fix".

If they have a waist band, rip out the stitches and take equal amounts from front, back and each side seams, restitch the waist band eliminating excess fabric from center back with a seam.

If they have facing instead, rip out the seams and take equal amounts from each of the 4 seams.

Front zipper? take equal amount from each side of the zipper the total equal to the back seam.

I have also made the darts and pleats deeper rather than taking all the excess material from the seams.

Merry Christmas to all fiberholics and may your stashes be the largest ever!!!
