My best advice to you is ride dirt, fall down, learn what you did wrong, try again, repeat. It beats the heck out of T boning a telephone pole, a car, ETC.
And remember-- ride like you are invisible. Because, you are. They will look right at you and it just doesn't register.
Remember this to. Next time you pull up to a main street, stop, look both ways, turn and nail the throttle. It takes about 2.6 seconds for the average sport bike to hit 60MPH from a dead stop. Count the seconds it takes you to look left, then right. Count the seconds it takes your grandmother to look left then right. Now, Grandma is one block away to your right (or left-- no matter, whichever way you are turning) When your grandma looked left, you weren't there. She looks right and you are pulling out and whacking the throttle. By the time she decides it's safe to go, you are just about to nail her drivers door.

Gee, we folks in the US have it pretty good. We can get a permit for a few bucks, ($8 in MO I think) ride a bike around (without a passenger) for just a bit, pass the regular test for a few more bucks and for a grand total of around $25, we can go buy a 185 mph bike and promptly kill ourselves. You young people have to put around on a dinky little bike for what? 2 years? I don't see the training ever becoming mandatory across the US. It certainly is a good idea, but for us Yanks, probably a little too restrictive for our tastes.

Hey X no body

This site will give you all the details and links you need:

and the advice to get as much practice off road as you can is great advice.

You won't be familiar with a lot of the stuff that happens on the road and the traffic priorities/signs/directions/ Asshole nose-picking car drivers will just leach the pleasure out of your ride if you aren't confident in your handling skills.

The C.B.T. day will be about £120. without lunch (!!) so if you do it in the winter (like I did - ****!) budget in another few quid for lots of coffee, hot pies, second pair of gloves, take your waterproofs, extra layers of clothes to try and keep warm - then laugh maniacly when you have to try and get that lot off for a pee!

Good luck, happy birthday, have fun.
