Tried to install the router to the mini, but keep getting that invalid 169 IP address. Got same when I tried to connect to the Macbook. Also tried resetting the router and cable modem to no avail.

Hi vcpuppy,

If your mini gets a 169 IP (These 169 IP's are given to your nic card by mac os) there could be 2 problems, 1 either your router is not giving out an ip or 2 the ethernet cable that u r using might have gone bad. Note: No need to reset u'r modem.

if you get 169 IP Even after changing the cable. Remove your belkin and connect the modem directly to your modem. If you get an IP then it is a prob with your router. If still 169 then it could be a static IP on your mini.

Good Luck, x+

Which Belkin router are you using? Is the router already connected to the network, and if so, what type of security is enabled?

Your best bet is to go to the Belkin site and download the Users Guide to whatever router you are using. It will have all the instructions you require, and if not, you can call the Belkin technical support and have somebody walk you through setup.

It is simple to locate the Users Guide you need. Here is the link to the Belkin support site:

http://www.belkin.com/support/

At the top of the page are boxes. In the first box select the Networking category. In the second box, select Routers, and in the final box, select your router.

Now, a page will appear which gives you some options. Select the option for Downloads, or Download User Guide, and then follow the link and click on the small icon for a PDF file. Wait while it downloads into your browser. It may take several moments depending on the speed of your connection. Don't try to scroll around in the manual until after it fully downloads or you can delay or freeze the download.

Now, you have two options. You can read the information from your browser, or you can click the Save button to save a copy to your hard drive. You can select the area of your hard drive you wish to download the file to.

If the manual does not help solve your issue, you will need to contact Belkin technical support. Please note that the first tech you speak to will be a level one. If s/he is unable to assist you, it will be esculated to a level two, and then a level three, if need be, so please be patient.

My ISP tech department just fried our Belkin router. Even though it is not Belkins fault, they are still sending us a replacement router, and it is a N1, when the fried one is a Pre-N. Very nice of them if I do say so myself. All we have to pay for is the shipping cost to send them the fried one. So, now we have a free upgrade on our router!

I just downloaded the Belkin N1 router User Manaul, so I could explain the steps to you. I know a manual will come in the package, but it sitll is helpfull to have one located on my hard drive too, and now I can read up on the setup before the router actually arrives. I discovered I will need to update my adapters if I wish to use WPA2 encryption, but that Vista does not yet support WPA2, and as I just built a Vista computer, (It only needs its sound card) I am not sure I want to use WPA2, because ALL of the nodes and adapters MUST support the type of encryption used or connections can't be made.

This is why I asked what type of security you are using. Each computer must be compatible with the encryption, and some software programs too, such as your firewall, if you have one, but as this is a Mac you probably don't. You should, even Macs are becoming at risk of attack these days. My sister has a Mac, it is all she ever uses, and she recently had to install a firewall, and a anti-virus program. Don't believe people who say that a Mac does not need security, as that is foolish assumptions and not true.

The Belkin tech phone number should be in the User manual. Let me see if I can locate it for you, hold on a moment:

1-800-2Belkin, or:

1-800-223-5546

Good luck and I hope you get this straightend out right away. Have a very happy holiday season!
