The Schip program has been widely recognized as a well run cost effective program that brought health care to millions of children who would otherwise have done without. In denying its benefits to another 10 to 12 million children who are now uncovered while at the same time spending two hundred million dollars a minute on a tribal civil war in Iraq I think it is clear the Bush’s family values extend only to his immediate family and even then only on what he perceives as his lofty place in history. The question is how many children will suffer between the time the existing limited bill expires and the Democrats come to power and rush a bill through. One is too many, two is obscene.
Isn’t it strange that the Republican debate did not mention health care at all. I guess they just placed their faith in the availability of Huckabee’s holey healing cloths.

I am not suppressed at the lack of facts in the answers. Republicans have always had difficulty in dealing with them. However calling a family of four earning twice the poverty level ,millionaires is a little bit of a stretch even for those who habitually distort the truth. Fair is fair, it has worked for hem in the past and remains their only hope for the future.
What is most distressing is the “Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?" sprit that characterizes most of the responses. I understand that these people, had to take their cousins or sisters to the high school prom, and spent their careers watching smarter more competent ( and even worse women and black people) get the promotions while they were stuck in the mail room or copy machine center but why take it out on the kids. Have they nobody else to pick on that wouldn’t hit back ? Fortunately the error is correctable and 2008 just keeps getting closer every day, Tick tock you all.

the republican debate wasn't really a debate....it was a conservative circle jerk.
Bush has accomplished the alienation of millions of people from the republican party by denying their children healthcare.
The cost of the program's increased funding was to be paid for by smoker's.....61 cent increase per pack of cigs.
Look at all the conservatives who are repeating Bush rehtoric that is a complete LIE !
btw- it's a bi-partisan bill you idiots !

Through property taxes, you already pay for some other people's kid to go to school, even if you don't have children of your own. And why now? Why is Bush, 7 years into his Presidency, all of a sudden acting like a fiscal conservative? He just asked for $70 billion MORE (above and beyond what we paid last year) to fight the war in Iraq. $35 billion spread out over 5 years for SCHIP is a drop in the bucket compared to the taxpayer money being flushed down the toilet known as Iraq.

Spin all you want and you may convince the ignorant but you still know you are wrong. Bush was willing to expand funding if the democrats agreed to keep the programs focus on KIDS and those in poverty NOT ADULTS and those with incomes some 400% of poverty. The democrats are playing political games at the expense of those that are truly in need and that is what you should be angry about. They knew that he would veto this ridiculous expansion of coverage to adults and those who make far more money than I do yet pushed the bill anyways so they would have a propaganda tool. Honest and caring politicians would have passed the bill adding the $5 billion or so in additional funds to focus on poor kids that Bush said he would agree to. Playing politics one more time has cost the poor and that is BS

The CBO estimates there are only 4 million not covered that should be however they already qualify. They estimated that 2 million kids that ALREADY have healthcare will be moved off their private insurance to governement programs with THIS bill. So what did he accomplish? he didnt allow more adults and middle class kids that are able to afford health insurance to be put on the tax payers backs.
oh and your 10 to 12 million is a lie. no estimate can be cited that says this will happen.

Once again congress sent the president a bill that would have added adults to a program that everyone says "provides health care to children". It goes against the declared purpose of the program.

He has just temporarily put a stop to creeping Socialism. Here is a wild and crazy idea, how about the parents provide for their own children? That should be a factor in deciding if they are to have children or not.

I'm all for taxpayer supported healthcare for those truly in need.
Helping a family that has no options, that is legitimate.
Asking taxpayers to bail out families that could afford health care, if only they'd give up one of their SUVs or choose dial-up instead of high-speed, or get 37 fewer versions of HBO on their cable packages...THAT is obscene.

To me, it is similar to the flag burning amendments proposed by the GOP congress a few years ago.
The Democrats have Bush on record vetoing a 2nd bill for poor children and the GOP congress supporting the veto by failing to override it.
I guarantee it will be used against them next year.

He accomplished something VERY important. He demonstrated that the government is not in the business of continually expanding freebies for those not interested in working for them!
He demonstrated that people who make enough money should actually PAY for their healthcare.
Can any of you who support SCHIP please name ONE successful, cost effective, government program?
