We're moving to Seattle (thinking of the West Seattle neighborhood), and we're looking for a neighborhood for my inlaws. They're interested in something nearby West Seattle that is more "rural" where they can get some property (~5 acres) and be within a 20 minute drive to us. Any suggestions?

The answers you've got so far are pretty on point.

A quick search on the winderemere.com web site shows only 3 residential properties with 1-5+ acres within what I would consider a 20 minute drive of West Seattle and they will both set you back multiple millions of dollars, and still will not be rural.

One possibility is to look at Vashon Island, but be warned that the only access is by ferry. The prices will be high (again in the millions) but that size of lot is available, and will be more "rural".

Otherwise you have to go further out. East to Duvall, Carnation, North to Snohomish, Monroe, West to the Olympic Peninsula are other options to look at in addition to the Auburn, Puyallup areas that have already been suggested.

Basically, you'll need to get further away from the I5 corridor, or get beyond Tacoma to the South or Marysville to the North in order to find larger properties like that. It's suburban along the I5 corridor for the most part.

20 minute drive from West Seattle? 20 minutes when? 8:00am on a weekday? Or 3:00am when no one is out on the roads?

As the others have said you will not find 5 acres within 20 minutes of West Seattle unless you have the big bucks to buy up some tract that the developers are salivating over. For five acres you need to look east towards North Bend or southeast toward Auburn, Maple Valley and points further east.

I say Good luck...you can't find five acres or less in Seattle within 20 miles of the city! The answers you've got so far have been quite accurate. I lived in Seattle 3 different times. I was up there again this past summer and it's even harder to find proeperty now then before.

The closest you are going to get is probably the Auburn area. That is the only place that would even have acres to buy. Or they could be across the sound in the Bremerton area, and be a 20 minute ferry ride away.

Well, I hope they have money. Five acres within 20 minutes of Seattle. Yikes! Big bucks.
