After signing in on my computer at home, a screen came up and said there was a "Trojan that cannot be repaired". Am I screwed??? I don't recall the name, but it was something like "Vunus". Thanks for your help! :-)

Wow, thanks for the help. I'm going to print your answers and try your advice later this evening. Again... thanks! And yes, I do have McAfee and a few days ago, pop ups w/site advisories kept popping up and now the screen with the trojan info is not a pop up, have not been able to get onto my homepage (as of last night anyway...). Now just one thing, Will I be doing any harm if I put my computer on later and go on the web... ugh... I'm very 'duh' on this! Thanks for your patience!

Don't try and repair the virus..instead choose quarantine. Turn off system restore ..go to control panel > system >system restore ..disable it and run a full virus scan. The reason for this is that viruses also exists in your system restore data. Don't listen to any novice telling you to use system restore to get rid of it. read the facts here if in doubt http://www.pchell.com/virus/systemrestore.shtml

If you don't have an antivirus program use an online scanner from ESET

http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

If its Vundo you have, then follow the instructions here

http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-112210-3747-99

it has a removal tool on top of the page for this virus specifically

Hi Sam,

Don't worry your computer is not screwed yet. Just relax and follow the steps.
1) If u have any antivirus installed. U can scan to remove the virus. If u don't have one can download from here : http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
Just download and install this will remove any torjan from your computer.

2) If u already have an antivirus then u can restore your system to a previous date by doing

start--> all programs--> accessories--> system tools--> System restore

This will bring up system restore dialogue box (This feature is available only on XP and Vista)

In the new window select Restore my computer to an earlier time and click on next. U will find a clander on the left half of the window select a any earlier date (Like one before this error started popping up!) then click restore. your system will restart once and everything will be back to normal. If this didn't work try a date earlier than that.

Caution : Any programs installed after that date will be removed. But the data's will still remain as such.
Feel free to get in touch.

Good Luck, x+

Could it have possibly have been a popup? Don't pay attention to internet browser windows that open when you visit sites and such. If the window was opened by your security software (McAfee and Norton are probably the most popular) then you have reason to worry. If the window just opens in a small browser while surfing the web, there is no reason to worry (the title bar of the window should tell you if it is your browser, or your security software).

Popups can look like a system window, but they are usually have blinking text, ask you to "click here" etc. Just close them. Going to complete the "free scan" or whatever they recommend will just put spyware/malware on your perfectly good computer.

You may want to install a popup blocker. Google Toolbar includes one, and the Firefox web browser has one included. While these do a good job, the occasional popup still makes it through.

Go to google and type in AVG. Download the free version of that software. I also suggest going to an electronics store and getting some type of antivirus. There is also a site that you can go to that will help with it. It is a free, step-by-step, forum-type site. I was just reading at there website, and it said something about Vundo, dont know if thats what you were talking about. But you'd need to download HiJack This from their website and do there instructions for posting then they will help you:

Vundo? Oh boy.

You have two options:

1. Take your system to a reputable repair shop to fix your infection(s). (You probably have more than one at this point)

2. Go to a HijackThis forum and get help from the vollunteers who give their free time to help people with little experiance clean up their systems from infections.

Here is a search page with several links for HijackThis forums:

http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=HijackThis+forums&src=IE-SearchBox

There is a great MSN group called Freeware and Shareware where experts help with infections, and even has a chat room where people can go and have experts remote into a system and fix it for them! I trust this group very much and am a member myself. Here is the link:

http://groups.msn.com/FreewareandShareware/welcome.msnw

Whichever forum you choose, you will need to sign up, but it is free and simple.

All is not lost, these folks are experts and can fix your system. If you choose the forums, please be patient as they are vollunteers and have to work around their normal activities such as jobs and family. They will get back to you as quickly as they can.
