X was the rating used for above R, and then when hardcore porn came out they used XXX. I believe XX was used but that was lame.

X was a film rating instituted by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) back in the 50s, for explicit material in films that wasn't suitable for viewers under 16 (This rating replaced the rating of H, or Horrific). A lot of films received an X-rating because of nudity or sexuality.
I'm just speculating, but something that is XXX is probably considered extremely sexually explicit, thus is probably why these letters are associated with the sex industry.

A sexully explicit movie gets the Rating "X" from the censor board...therefore a triple X would be super sexy!

To rate a movie having sex, sex-sex, or sex-sex-sex, it's easier to call it xxx (just like lol, lmao, brb etc.)

Because typically, when something is censored or edited, it is replaced with X's. As with video, that's the most they can do when they are putting it into text. Anything and everything should be censored or edited.

I think it has to do with movie ratings..........PG, R, etc. A rating of X had sexual content and then the more X's the worse it got............OK?
