With the exception of the two above me, I'm quite surprised at how mature these answers are. Personally, it has always been apples and oranges to me. In hockey, you're a human missile going down the ice at about 40km/h trying to hit someone, but research has shown that the average NFL tackle is about the same as getting into a car accident. Like a lot of people, I've been in a car accident and those things aren't fun (stupid 18-year-old bimbo on a cell phone not paying attention....).
WTFever: try playing hockey without pads and having a frozen piece of rubber hit bone or your face at freeway speeds. I'd rather play football without pads than that.

this question is easy, football player players are tougher. hockey is an awesome sport and can get physical, but watch a hockey game and then watch a football game. in hockey there may be one or two big checks a game which will make you go wow, but other than that all the other checks are more tactful and see much more poke checking, players are not getting hit every time up and down the ice. on ther other hand, almost every single player on the feild has some sort of physical contact every single play, and almost every tackle is equivalent to one check in hockey... especially between the tackles. imagine playing 82 games in football? not possible. theres a reason why- too excruciating. and hockey and football games are just as long. some times i feel like u guys just say anything you want. and rugby and lacrosse? come on guys, while you have your share of big hits, it doesnt even compare.

I think it's hockey players hands down. For six extremely simple, yet often overlooked reasons:
1. They play hockey on rock-hard ice, not soft grass, if you get hit and fall down; that's twice the damage.
2. They play hockey with a weapon; a stick. You can get slashed and hooked, and it hurts--a lot.
3. Hockey is played with a hard rubber puck that flies at up to 110 mph. Hockey players block shots all the time, it really hurts a lot to get up from being struck by a puck going 100 mph. I'm not even mentioning how crazy the goalies are.
4. In hockey there are boards and glass. Players can get checked face first into the boards and break several bones in their face. In football, you can get hit, but once again you just fly out onto the soft grass. AND there are full facemasks in football, it is not so in hockey.
5. Hockey players play 82 games in a hockey season, football player play only 16 games in a football season.
6. There is actual fighting in hockey. Yes, it is legal to punch people. Not so in football.

It's hard to say...Hockey players get hits just as often as football players do, they punch each other constantly...and both hockey games I've been to, somebody took a hit in the face with the puck and they both got back up (but didn't play again).
Then you go to football and you see hits like the one on Reggie Bush by the Eagles last year in the playoffs, or helmet-to-chin hits like the Browns on Chad Johnson...and they get up and continue to play.
I really don't think you can say either players are tougher, they're both very physical sports.

I don't know if you can generalize, because I think it depends on the player.
The sports are both tough, but very different. As much as I love hockey, I never felt nearly as bad after playing a game as I would after getting hit a few times in football. Hockey wears you down pretty good aerobically and it really sucks getting a stick or puck in the face, but there's just more chance of a truly violent injury in football.
I think both are tough, and I can't put one above the other. Hockey is a grind over 82 games, while football is hard enough on the body that they can only play once a week.

288----Higher than freeway speeds, 2!!!!
Haha i had this same argument with my friend the other day. I asked football players which was harder, and HE admitted that he couldnt play hockey for his life. And...hockey players have to skate aand stick handle while football players run and catch. Ice or grass??? Checked into the boards or thrown into air??? Air filled ball or frozen rubber in the face??? Full face mask or helmet???? Ya...ive made my point

Hockey players are way tougher. A tackle is harder, than a check in hockey, but football players don't have to play as long during a game. Also, the hockey season is way longer.

I love football but I am going to have to give it up to Hockey players. If you mess with a football player you have to deal with his whole team if you mess with a hockey player he may beat up your whole team. 80% of the guys I play lacrosse with play or played hockey and I wouldn't want to scrap with any of them. I have seen what they are capable of. Hockey players, Rugby players and Lacrosse players all have a few screws loose. Football is organized violence the others are just violent.

i love football dont care too much about hockey BUT!!! I have to say hockey plays because these guys and slam their opponents in the glass and they let these dudes fight i mean in football they get penalized and maybe even fined for hitting the freaking QB in the head. Its Football baby let these guys go at eachother and put these QB in the ground ( Like Tom Brady)
