I think he was in the Royal Artillery, and he was at the battle of El Alemagne. He was also in a battle on Mount Vesuvious when it erupted in the 1930s/40s.

Find out his unit number, there should be a number of ways to do that, then look it up. There are records that list what units were engaged where.

Most war records are sealed for 75 years. Therefore his war record would not be available, the same with some other archive records. You may be able to get information through regiments and Legions as to military movements and should start with whatever regiment he was attached to. Some people have written autobiographies and others books on war time exploits.

Good luck with your search.

Its also worthwhile talking to all your relatives, especially the older generation, as they might have stories, pictures etc, although sometimes the memories of 50 years ago are not spot on, this could help narrow your search.

From the El Alamein and Vesuvius, its most likely that he was in the 8th Army, the 'Desert Rats'. Here's a wiki link

Once you have determined which RA regiment he belonged to you should be able to find details of it's war service in the central records office. You will have to pay to access the war diaries. It is a long trawl for you but you are almost certain to find mention of him.
