I already have my BA in mathematics, but no education credits towards teacher licensure. Should I get a Master's? Is an online university a good method for acquiring the additional education I need?

Because math teachers are in such short supply, many states will let you begin teaching right away and you can work on teaching credentials as you go.

For example, in Georgia where I live, math teachers are considered a critical need area; therefore, you can begin teaching immediately. Most four year universities offer some courses on-line that lead to certification. In Georgia, you only have to take a few classes to become certified.

My suggestion would be to go to the board of education for the state in which you wish to teach and determine what they require. Conversely, you can call the local school board and they should be able to give you the same information.

I'm sure as soon as you say "math" they will be interested!

It varies from state to state, so you would do well to inquire at the school or department of education at local college, or you could ask at your state's department of education. In California, you can enter an internship program in which you can teach under the direction of a college instructor and a master teacher at the school where you teach. While doing this, you would attend classes and get your credential. You also get paid.

Most states do not require a masters to teach. Many universities grant the MS at the same time as the credential.

No

Even with a Masters you need the teacher education courses.

The MASTERS however wuld let you teach undergradtuate college as is.

To teach HS yu need the Ed courses, the Praxis and may have to student teach.

For college it's just a Masters or almost a Masters.

My neighbor is a math teacher in South Florida and I know she never got her Master's. She attends special math training camps that the state offers which then increases her salary upon successful completion..

Not sure about online classes, but I'd like to wish you luck. I admire people who have the patience to teach kids, because I don't..

My son taught high school biology and chemistry with just his BS in biology. He had no experience whatsoever. He taught for 4 years while getting his masters. School loved him. Answer adds for teachers in your area. Math teachers are always needed. Good luck!!
