For others who are also looking for some real answers on this, here's something from me. Buying a dining table for your dining room is probably a good idea, regardless of whether you eat in front of the TV all the time or not. There will come a time when you will need to entertain people in your home, and it might not be a good idea to cram all the food you prepared for such an occasion on a TV tray. Sure, you might have a kitchen table that you can use for this as well, but why have your guests crowd in your kitchen? In order for you to choose the right kind of table for your dining room, looking at the room itself and basing your decision on the color scheme of the room is a good first step. The next thing you need to do is to find a table that fits the space the room has. You wouldn’t want to have a dining room that can only hold a dining table in it, and nothing else, right? There are many options for you to choose from – four seaters, two seaters, six seaters and even 8 seaters. You can also choose to buy a separate table and separate chairs if you want an odd number of chairs around your dining table.

Please do not leave placemats on the wooden dining room table.
I had a six thousand dollar Thomasville Dining Room set and I left the placemats on the table.
They melted into the finish and damaged the table. Eventually I had to have the table refinished.

It shouldn't hurt at all. Is your dining room table going to be finished? Even if it isn't, rubber doesn't harm wooden surfaces... especially indoors in a controlled environment

No, the rubber backing should be fine UNLESS you spill a solvent on the mats. In otherwords, no Windex, Acetone or other reagents that could dissolve the rubber.
Under normal conditions, you will be fine with rubber mats.

As long as they are in SHORT use. Don't leave them on your table for months at a time! They will eventually cause problems. Why try it? Get better placemats!!!

I wouldn't use them...sometimes the rubber backing sticks to a wood surface. Just use any cloth or woven mats with no backing on them.
