Norton is a process hog, it's a good choice to find something else. These programs are stronger that Norton and work much better.
NOD32 is the best at-cost AV, and for freeware, Avira Antivir is your best choice (even beats NOD32 in some tests ;).
Look at these ratings: http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/comparatives.html
Comodo Personal Firewall is one of the strongest software firewalls, and it's free.

here are some recommendations from available freeware - these are all completely free, not trials:
firewall:
Comodo (http://www.comodo.com)
Comodo recently released version 3.0 of its firewall, which adds an intrusion prevention component that's very effectively, though it does take time for it to learn your system, and requires some ongoing attention by the user to make sure programs don't get improperly block. Comodo is one of the strongest firewalls available, freeware or commercial, according to the independent testing site matousec.com.
antivirus: (listed in order of preference)
Avira (http://www.free-av.com)
AVAST! Home (http://www.avast.com)
AVG (http://free.grisoft.com)
all provide realtime protection and automatic updates; all have ICSA and VB100 certification, but Avira has been among the highest rated in tests by several respected US and UK computer publications.
antispyware:
Spyware Terminator (http://www.SpywareTerminator.com) or
Spyware Doctor (http://pack.google.com)
either one will give you good, realtime protection, along with
Ad-Aware Free (http://www.lavasoftusa.com) and
Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org) for additional removal ability.

Oh yeah!
I got the same thing! It was impossible to remove it!
Btw, I run Linux now, and have done for over a year.
It's free and it has no need for Norton because there are virtually no virusses for it.

At the lab we recommend to use Trend Micro as your Anti-Virus software. We haven't had any issues with it. It works really great and is also user friendly.
Best of Luck and Great Question.
Hope this helps to point you in the right direction.

I also have Norton but it seems okay. My girlfriend told me about one that is free that she has called Ad-Aware or Ad-Ware or something like that. Good Luck!
