How can the UK government justify spending billions on updating our nuclear defense system when Russia and the USA would wipe the world out with there own arsenals?

If a country fires a nuke at us then I don't really want to live here anymore (the world)

If they fire a nuke at us, we'll all be fuked. Britain is only a small country so one nuke will effect all of us. Anyway an answer to your question. Yes it is a big waste of money.

The question is not whether you should update a nuclear defense system. As long as rogue nations like Iran and Syria have "the bomb" or can get "the bomb" quickly, your only hope is deterrent force. As in, "you hit me and I'll bury your butt in radioactive glass."

Other posters in the Yahoo Answers group seem to think that the USA is a gun culture. But this nuclear update by the UK proves that the USA isn't alone. The gun culture is a mentality of deterring the other guy, of making it too costly to start something that you can't finish in a single shot.

Which is why we have yet to come to grips with international terror organizations that are stateless. What needs to happen is that when a terror group is found to have trained in some particular nation, that nation's army must root out the terror camps. Nobody can be allowed to turn blind eye towards terror. Algeria was the most recent victim of Al Qaeda. That is Moslem against Moslem - how do they justify that? They don't! To them, all acts of blind violence advance their cause, if only they knew what their cause was.

So EVERY nation needs to maintain a good defense at all levels. Police, military, missile defense, deterrent forces. All levels. Until sanity returns to the world - if it ever does.

I doubt that it is exactly what the taxpayers want their money to be spent, but London is considered the financial capitol of the world. If someone nukes London, the UK is screwed, which leaves part of the EU defenseless. That means in that period of vulnerability, someone could nuke Rome and/or Paris, and if THAT happens, the world is pretty f@#ked over.

Britain has been a beacon of freedom for hundreds of
years. This alone has made them a target of Islamic
terrorists.
A strong military has allowed such a tiny country as
the UK to survive many, many wars in history.

Because there are a lot of little countries now, and there are going to be a lot more in the future, who are able to rattle nuclear weapons. We need to be able to threaten them with mass incineration if they use them to threaten us.

That is the reason why we need to pool the efforts in research and development on a European level to reduce the costs !!!

Just accept it, any of our member states is just ridiculously small on an international scale.

We have to pool our defense if we want to be together "the other" significant component of NATO.
