All the answers given.....my daughter had tennis balls on all the kids chairs in elementary school so it does serve a purpose beyond walkers. I worked in a nursing home where people went from carpet to bare floors and it helps from having the walker get ahead of you or stopping abruptly.

Walkers are made with rubber stoppers on the bottom. They wear out so tennis balls last longer. I worked with disabled people who used walkers.

Safety reasons. I saw a lady in the parking lot yesterday and it was icy, her walker had wheels. She was alone, I thought it was an accident ready to happen.

it protects floors from scratching and provides a rolling resistance so the walkers are easier to handle ... and one other reason -- most walkers are made from aluminum -- it's a very soft metal -- if there's no protection on the rear legs they will wear down -- in the summertime I used to see an old lady who would walk past my house to the grocery store -- she didn't have any protection on the rear legs -- the rear legs were badly worn down from dragging on the concrete

So they slide easier and they don't trip because the rubber on those walkers tend to stick to the floor. At least that is what one lady told me.

That way they can slide them across the floor without it getting stuck. Otherwise, without the tennis balls, they would have to pick it up with each step, as intended.

On the wheels or on the legs? For the legs--they slide easier but don't leave scuff marks.
