It's a good question.
Let's find out.
One can argue what about whether or not we should have gone in, what should have been done up to now, etc. etc. etc.
If we want to get out, or at least stay in with the support of Iraqis, this is what I think should happen.
1. In consultation with the Iraqi government, come up with a date for withdrawl. This would solidify our claim that we are liberators and not occupiers.
2. Once we set that date, we stick to it and announce something like. . "The United States has kept its word, and are withdrawing our forces. The freedom that was bought with Iraqi and American blood is now the responsibility of the Iraqi people's to maintain. Either find a way to share this power, and live in prosperity or be doomed to the bloodshed and misery of a civil war and al-Qaeda extremism."
3. If they choose peace and prosperity, terrific. We gain a democratic ally in the region
4. If they choose civil war, we sit it out. We either let it play out and recognize the winner, or we hold out until one party basically agrees to our conditions for returning troops to the region. (which is basically whatever we think is necessary. . . unfettered pursuit of al-Qaeda, a share of oil revenue to offset expenses, etc). And if we have to return, it is not as a target. It is with such overwhelming force that it is ridiculous.

This is completely and utterly the truth about what would happen. Right now we are deployed in Iraq, we've go that clear, now, the Iraqi government is still newly formed and still has a lot of work to do. If we suddenly pull out, they will be overrun, and probably gain a dictatorship. The Iraqi government is leaning on our shoulder here, and we have come this far, we can not pull out now, or they will come crashing down. compare this statement to what they say on the news, "oh...were losing this war!", which is exactly what they want us to think so that we send them money to help pay for it.
That is what would happen!

This question is designed to scare people.
First of all, no one is going to pull ALL of the troops out of Iraq the day after they take the Oath of Office. I know that conservatives think liberals are stupid and don't understand how the world works, but that is the naivete that conservatives operate under.
Secondly, the war will never "come here." As conservatives continually point out in their arguments that we should be allowed to torture the people we're fighting... the people we're fighting are not an organized army. Therefore, they will not invade the U.S.
Thirdly, even if that happened... don't we have a military to defend this country? Do you think that a small group of insurgents (whose ONLY goal, by the way, is to get the U.S. the hell out of THEIR country) is going to be able to put up a good fight against our armed forces?
Why the Chicken Little Syndrome?

Before we get too far ahead of our selves, I read an estimate that it will take 18 to 24 months to get our troops and equipment out of Iraq once the decision is made.
If we elect a president who intends to pull out (of Iraq!), and he or she takes office in January 2009, we will still probably have troops in Iraq through Christmas 2010. (Three years from now!)
That sounds like plenty of time for the Iraqis to straighten up and run their own country.
Of course the time table could be moved ahead if we move the troops into neighboring Iran instead of dragging them all the way back here. If we do that we don't have to worry as much about the war coming back to us.

Since you asked for 'personal opinions'...I will be glad to give you mine.
First of all, if and when we pull out of Iraq - it will be just a matter of time before the country returns to the historical roots of Islamic Governance - and the governing party will be the one who comes out of the civil war between the Shiites and the Sunni. The Kurds will hover in their little corner of the world and wait to negotiate with the victors for their piece of land. They may continue the "democratic" process of electing a President and Representatives - but there will be an Ayatollah or Religious Head that will have the final say in all matters of policy or laws.
Should we bring all of our troops back to the homeland and remove all significant presence in foreign lands....there certainly will be enough to cover our borders and keep the extremist from coming here to attack us. Let them bring the war to our soil...it will be alot easier then to eliminate them because they won't be that hard to spot.

It's simple. If we pull out of Iraq now it will be perceived by our enemies that America is weak. All terrorists have to do is put up constant resistance and continue nit picking it attacks. Plus politically motivated and 'well intentioned Americans, continue attacking our being there politically from the inside.
You see. actions do speak louder than words. It's all about perception. Isn't it? What Americans perceive as strength at home. Is perceived as weakness to the terrorists and haters of freedom all over the world.
Edit: Someone said Viet Nam is peaceful. But big deal. In war to the victors belong the spoils of war. That country is communist now. They trade now because they need money to empower their government. History will repeat itself if we leave. And I am certain that millions of Iraqi citizens do not want to see terrorists start fighting amongst themselves to see which brand will run that country.

In my personal opinion what would happen will be the same that happens 5 years from now. If we are worried about a lot of people dying, it will happen no matter when we leave. As far as them following us here, what is keeping them from attacking us here now? Us being in Iraq? I don't think so.

That depends on when we leave. The democrat candidates have already said they can't pull us out of Iraq any time soon. Except for Kucinich and Paul, but they're not going to win.
