Mike Huckabee is rising steadily in the polls, especially with conservatives. He has so many great ideas. Yet his past history shows that he granted over 1000 pardons, that he is weak on illegal immigration, and several other things of concern to conservatives. If you are a conservative, and if you are aware of these things, how do you reconcile these seeming contradictions? Do you think he would make a good President?

I'm a fiscal conservative, and I do not see Huckabee as a good alternative to the borrow and spend incumbent.

The same people who bashed Clinton for issuing pardons will - um - pardon Huckabee for the same thing, I'll bet. Pardon the pun....

I lived in Arkansas while both Clinton and Huckabee were in office. About all Huckabee ever did was say "I'm not Clinton." I do not see him as strong so much as stubborn, and his political staff used to be vindictive and full of vituperative! I've had all that I need for a while. He's also an ideologue who will not let the facts get in the way of his "vision."

I'm afraid ideas are nothing unless they're implemented. He has zero foreign policy experience so that means he's clueless about the global economy, a nuclear Iran, a nuclear Korea, OPEC, etc. He's weak on illegal immigration, crime and ignorant about other religions. Ye,he brags that he is the only candidate with a degree in Theology. Did he only study Baptist theology? And his education platform is for the states to determine. IMO if one can't read the written word, the ability to read music is a mute point. He might make a good president if the South was it's own country, but we as a country are not religious zealots who believe that Christ and the devil slept in bunk beds growing up! (Arby's points bear witness to his agenda. Well said sister.)

specific he does...yet basically at teh convention.. At teh beginning up of this night, the clicking pronounced that Huck mandatory ninety one% of the relax delegates to win...What they forgot to let us know replaced into that McCain mandatory 40-one% himself. Already McCains huge sort has long gone as much as 40 3% and evidently like it would desire to flow up extra (40 5%) or so by utilising the top of the night as Huckabee is kicking him good. the clicking and McCain marketing campaign extremely screwed up with the "presumptive" label...stupid stupid stupid. With decrease turnouts now, Huckabee is in a much extra powerful place than earlier. McCain is a shoo-in...yet a ways much less so than he replaced into final Wednesday AM.

Although I have not been following the political situation regarding candidates closely, my greatest concern is that Hillary will become our next president by default. That default being that so many in the republican party are moving to the political left - the same left that the democrats have vacated in favor of ever further left positions. Not a good platform on which to seek election! I want a man/woman/black/white person of integrity who will stand up for American values which made this nation what it used to be. (not what it IS, but what it USED TO BE).

I am a 49 year old, third generation Arkansan who survived Huckabee's terms of governor and I was SO glad when he left. I've been stunned to realize that he has achieved any prominence or consideration to be the leader of the United States. It scares me, quite frankly. His legacy and record are all slick rhetoric followed by pandering to a fundamentalist fan base.

The environment suffered greatly under his administration..civility and respect for diversity suffered..every aspect of social, educational and economic advancement that had happened under Clinton was set back. ( Under Clinton, education and the economy had a major upswing, the environment suffered..but this is ridiculous what's happened SINCE! )The fundies had a field day while he was governor.

He supported and convinced voters to deny homosexuals rights to have civil marriages
He supports refusing them the right to foster children

He refused to meet with animal welfare groups who had been petitioning to make animal cruelty a felony. Arkansas is now one of only seven states that consider deliberate, malicious acts of cruelty to animals a misdemeanor offense.

His "covenant marriage act" that he lauded as such a wonderful victory for families is now chosen by a miniscule number of new couples marrying beause of the hardships it places on women in abusive relationships seeking divorce!

Here are some pages to check Huckabee's record.http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/huckabees_fiscal_record.html also do a search on Huckabee at factcheck and these items appear:
Huckabee claimed he would “abolish the IRS.” He failed to mention that he’d replace it with another big tax bureaucracy.
Huckabee said he had proposed to make children of illegal aliens eligible for Arkansas scholarships if they "had been in our schools their entire school life.” Actually, the proposal required only three years in Arkansas schools.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee praised a "fair tax" but failed to note that it would ease the burden on the richest Americans while imposing a stiff retail sales tax of perhaps 34 percent. Whether thie proposal he said he supported is "fair" or not is of course a matter of opinion. In fact, President Bush's bipartisan Advisory Panel on Tax Reform rejected the idea, saying it would substantially increase taxes for 80 percent of U.S. taxpayers while benefiting those at the top. The panel calculated that a sales tax would have to be set at 34 percent of retail sales prices to bring in the same revenue as the taxes it would replace, meaning that an automobile with a retail price of $10,000 would cost $13,400 including the new sales tax.

LOOK HERE also to see if what he supported in 2002 is what you want for your president..( He refused to answer the questions to these issues again in 2007) http://votesmart.org/npat.php?can_id=1657 < Project Vote Smart

Here it indicates when given the choices of supporting either k) Support age-appropriate sexual education programs that teach about abstinence, contraceptives, and HIV/STD prevention methods.
or
l) Support abstinence-only sexual education programs.
He chose the abstinence only sexual education program.
I went to school in the 60s and 70s and we learned about STD's THEN! I can recall learning that a girl in my very own class figured out she HAD an STD from watching the film in high school that taught about it. I cannot imagine a responsible parent, yet alone responsible leader not wanting a populace that is educated about our own bodies.

Is he afraid if children and teens learn about contraception and STDs that it encourages sex in that population? ( if so, he is also too ignorant to be the leader of the U.S. )

Can the U.S. afford a President whose science literacy is so low that he believes that creationism is a legitimate *alternative* to a scientific theory?

For a time I just wrote off the popularity of Huckabee among the vocal Christian conservatives in Arkansas a reflection of our states lower educational and economic status..but now that I see his rise in popularity in the general populace it downright terrifies me to think I live in a nation that is heading into the dark ages, educationally, socially and morally.

Here is one of the more outrageous and frightening legacies of Mike Huckabee..regarding animal cruelty issues. Please read this,http://hslf.typepad.com/political_animal/2007/12/the-presidentia.html then tell me, after all I've pointed out..Is this a man of compassion, ethics, intelligence, sound judgement and one who would safeguard our Constitution for the rights of all citizens?
It feels like the right wing agenda is leading our nation to hell in a handbasket and all I can do is look on with horror.

The next presidential campaign disturbs me because there isn't any candidate I really like..but there is ONE that simply horrifies me at the thought of any possibility of him becoming our President.

If this is an episode of the Twilight Zone, I sure need a commercial break about now.

I like what he is saying..so far. The pardons I have not seen, new immigration laws will be addressed one way or another during the next presidency. If I had to vote today, Huckabee would be my choice.

He'll go nowhere. All anyone has to do is put the 2 grieving mothers on tv. People hate it when rapists are paroled to rape and kill twice more. Remember Dukakis?

Yes, I think he would make a good president. God tells us to be forgiving and I appreciate his allegiance to God, not to your standards. So, forgiving 1000 people is WWJD..as Jesus forgave the woman caught in the act of adultery. As far as immigration goes, maybe he is right...a liberal immigration policy will help us at least temporarily, until we can put a stop to the senseless killing of the unborn.

I personally don't like the fact of where he is FROM!!! I mean didn't this country vote in another man from Arkansas???? Look where that took us! Sorry , I know that is petty.

I am becoming more distrustful of him for more reasons of course.

At this point, WHO are we going to vote for?! GOD HELP US!
