They are not a right, they are a luxury, like cruise control. Most people don't even bat an eye when they hear one going off, and you sure won't see them caling 911! A better way to protect your car is a cut off switch, which any dealership can install when you buy your car. It is a switch that is hard-wired into your steering column, and breaks the circuit between your ignition and the battery. It usually contains a piece that must be inserted into it to complete the circuit, and your car cannot be started without it. Most insurance companies will even give you a discount if you have one, just like with an alarm.
My brother has one in his Chevy truck, and was glad he did when someone tried to steal the truck. It cost him $550 to repair the damage from the actual break in, but when compared with the cost of replacing the actual truck, it was a definite bargain!

That depends on if you have had your car, truck, home or wallet stolen lately. I had a truck that was riped off, and then the insurance company paid off with less than the truck was worth. Alarms are the result of a broken country that can not protect its citizens and a broken confidence that even an alarm does not heal.
About one more year of Conservative ideas and policies in this Country and we will have alarms that everyone will hear around the clock.
So I guess my answer is, alarms are facts of life after the Law and Order Policies of the Conservatives have done nothing to make it safer and have given us the necessity to not only make a living, but also to police our property ourselves!

both
just as in anything a person who decides to live or park in an area where there are rules already set up for noise control then they will have a problem. Those rules or laws are set up by people who have children, there are elders, or they personally are stressed out from work, or they work strange hours....wait...that's all of us. Ok, so there are laws in place to protect us against us.
People who have noisy cars need to be responsible and shut them off as soon as they go off. A lot of people ignore the alarm and let it run its course, thereby annoying other people and causing laws to be made.

False alarms outnumber theft attempts in my area, big nuisance. Too loud, no one pays attention to them.

we call them yuppie alerts; hear one, and you know you have an arrogant yuppie parked nearby. most people around here think it should be legal to shut them off by any means necessary. you really don't want to let one sqawlk around here for long (if you like your shiny new finish), and i think they are now illegal here.
these alarms do almost nothing to deter crime in many places.
