The Yamato and her sister ship the Musashi where the biggest battleships in the Japanese navy, in fact they had the the largest guns ever deployed on any battleship (18.1inch).

Yamato was sunk by U.S. aircraft during operation Ten-Go on 7th April 1945, which was basically a naval Kamikaze assault against U.S. warships supporting the invasion of Okinawa.

Yamato and the other craft hardly got out of Japanese home waters before they were decimated.
