Arguably as legitimate as any of the other small, fringe parties in Germany at the time. Hitler's 'achievement' was to convert this small group of disaffected veterans and friends who couldn't even fill up the tavern they met in to a major powerhouse in German politics. It was a bit over 13 years from Hitler joining to his becoming chancellor in 1933.

Virtually a club in a pub before Hitler came along. Founded by nationalistic railwayman Anton Drexler d. 1942 - wonder what he thought about it all?

The party was already in existence but was tiny before Hitler became the head of it.

Not really--prior to Hitler, it was mostly a bunch of fellows in dead-end jobs or the unemployment lines who hadn't had a reason to feel good about themselves since the Armistice.

No, he really made that party. He didn't become head of it, as such, he started its growth on a national level.

Also remember, he was jailed for trying to have a coup before he tried to be elected legitimately.
