RE:
What does 'Twas' mean? To was? What kind of a word is to was?

'Twas= it was, but it shouldn't be a capital "T." It's too late to change the "Night Before Christmas Story" now & doing to would ruin it. I mean, hey, a grammatically correct Christmas story? That'd take all the enjoyment out of it. LOL

It was the night before Christmas and all through the house...

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house...

It passed Yahoo's spell checker.

The apostrophe is always used to show where the letters are omitted, in this case, at the beginning of the word.

Sometimes here in Vermont, you hear one of those old-timey contractions. My dad found that someone had taken something out of his barn and confronted a couple of free-spirited local boys on the road. "T'warn't me!" was the one boy's reply. He's now a middle-aged man, but when we pass him, we say "Hey, there's T'warn't Me Smith!"
