you said "pick" (or choose) between the two which to me would mean there was a triangle and a situation going on.
for me that wouldn't be difficult...the answer is "both" and I'd start all over fresh because there would be forever hard feelings between all, and if you chose one over the other you'd always be thinking "did I make a mistake?", and, even very good friends let you down, as a lover would as well because they are both people and humans. People do change over time, for the good, for the bad, for the indifferent, or just attitudes or just life in general and it could never be predicted which of the two would change, when or how. I know that lovers can change (many ways, including get mean after a divorce or any kind) and I know that friends even who are well intentioned can out of hurt be backstabbers. Instead of having to make a decision, I'd just walk away from it (from both). If one or both come back to attempt to be friends at a later time I'd want ground rules. The rules would be, there's no looking back, we're starting new right now.

does it count if your lover IS the best friend that you've had since you were a kid? (my scenario now)
would I have to give it up completely? His friendship has always meant more to me than anything, ever - he's always been there no matter what. I'd have to say I'd give up the 'lover' part before I'd give up the friendship...
how would that work, anyway?

lover and not the best friend.. i'm very clear in my mind... the chances of ur lover cheating on u r fairly less than a friend doing it to u... i was very restrictive in taking anyone as friend... still i had a friend and i went all out for him. .. i took him as partner in my business and he ruined me completely and left me high and dry under heavy loss... i entered in business on his expertise and finance was mine and we were equal partner... he took me for a ride... no woman I ever loved would have done that to me... so go by your lover and leave the friend.. my experience is not an isolated event.. it happened second time and the story was same.. it happened with others too and the story was same..

I would have to say my lover, very best friends are for life, plus if your lover leaves you or hurts you, your very best friends are there. It would kill me but thats what I would choose

I've been there myself. My best friend, and sadly she was also my Lover - talk about a double whammy this was a decision that was thrust upon us.
But now, - a year on - I wouldnt give up on my fiancee as shes both my Lover and very best friend.
