Our lease is up the end of February so we aren't looking to move to another place until then. That's about 10 weeks away. I don't want to go looking for a place and find somewhere that we like but the owners end up wanting to rent it sooner than the end of February. Should we wait or go ahead and start looking? I see in the paper a place that sounds perfect for what we need.

Start looking and talk to the landlord about how flexible they are. If you find one by the first of Jan,see if you can put a deposit down for it to be held.

I have done this, the deposit is non-refundable if you do not move in by the date agreed.

If you want to live in a complex, start just after New Year's. Keep looking through January. Private landlords will know availability towards the end of the month. You will want to have things pretty much wrapped up by the end of January (or early February) so that you can then focus on the actual move.

good luck!

I would start around January. As you mentioned yourself, some owners/landlords want tenants within a month or so for moving in.

But right now would be a good idea to look around for "areas" that you may want to live in. Once you have an idea of the area, then make random stops in that area and check out the noise levels, traffic etc. This is just to make sure you can handle being in that area
