*Hi guys, I'm suppose to get a Septoplasty done in a few weeks. The doctor said they are going to stitch silicone stents in my nose to support my septum. He also said ill be able to breath out of my nose, even with the stents in?

*Has anyone out there had this done, and if so to what degree can you, or cant you breath.

*Plus are there any tricks I should know about to help air clear my nasal passages during this time. Saline sprays, etc.?

*Thanks for your answers and enjoy your holidays.

I had a septoplasty with the silicone doyle splints put in. There are times when you can breathe, albeit sparsely. You can breathe but it is not anywhere the volume that can go through your nose when it is not obstructed. I was able to breathe after he took out the splints and I vow to this day that it was the 2nd best surgery I have ever had out of my 7 surgeries. The first was Lasik. I breathe now like I did not before. I had a deviated septum. I would say that your breathing will be about 25% of normal with the splints, they are pretty big. You will rely on mouth breathing for a while. Nasal sprays will not help you as this is a foreign obstruction and the only way to help it is to remove the obstruction which he will do in 1 to 3 weeks. It will be the best surgery you ever had if you have chronic problems breathing. A little pain and discomfort for 2 weeks until the splint comes out but then in the end it is all worth it. I would not put any sprays or anything in my nose the doc did not tell you to.

Hey. I just had the procedure done yesterday. I was actually able to get a good nights sleep last night, and still have my splints in. You will be able to breathe through your nose with the splints in. As soon as I was done surgery I was able to notice a difference. My septum was also severely deviated for years though. I hear that once the splints are taken out, you feel even better! Id imagine it would hard to breathe with splints in. Use an antibiotic ointment, peroxide, and saline solution twice a day in your nose. They'll give you oral pain and antibiotic medicine.

I'm not a medical professional and you shouldn.t take any merit in what I say. You should seek qualified advice. Now for my responce. Wish I could help you since I know how it feels to have medical conditions which can become worrisome. I don't really know what a septoplasty is but i would suggest you ask your doctor since you have one more on the matter. I don't think the doctor would release you if you weren't able to breathe correctly in some matter but that is just my opinion. Adios and hope you get more in depth responces.
