Prior to my pregnancy, if I had breakfast it would be a banana or some fruit. After I learned of my pregnancy, I was conscious that I was not only eating more (some days I would eat just enough to keep her alive), but making sure all food groups were met. At least, I would make sure I would have a whole grain, a fruit or veggie, protein and calcium source at all meals, or one as a snack. So, I would have cereal with soy milk for breakfast (whole grains and calcium and protein), orange juice (extra calcium and folic acid, and, of course, fruit) and a piece of fruit as a mid-morning snack. (I would eat breakfast at seven or eight in the morning and by ten I'd be hungry again.) I would take granola bars with me in case I got hungry, or my next meal was further than anticipated, or we went out for dinner and there wasn't much I wanted to eat (the meal/menu was heavy on meat, eggs and dairy). I buy granola bars from Trader Joe's, a grocery store chain that sells all natural foods for cheap. (A box is only $2.) I also used to get TJ's fruit and grain bars for under $2. They're like Nutri-Grain bars, but all-natural and cheaper.
I digress.
Even now, since I'm nursing, I still do that. When I was pregnant, there were days when I would go a little happy, like when we went to a buffet. (Even a vegan, or at least this one, can walk away from a large buffet, like Golden Corral full. However, I question some of the nutrition of some of the vegetable and fruit offerings.) When we did do that, I would still have a normal dinner. In my early pregnancy, I was attacked with a cold and was not hungry at all. Had I not been pregnant, I wouldn't have eaten much, but I still ate normally. My baby needed it. I think my 24 pound weight gain was pretty decent, considering I didn't exercise.
Even now that I'm breastfeeding, I still try and eat the same, making sure I eat all of my fruits and veggies, grains, etc. It took about a month for me to quit eating like I was pregnant and going back to being mindful of portion sizes. Actually, if I had been more mindful of portion sizes when i was pregnant, I probably would have gained less weight. Eh. As it is, I only have five pounds to go, as I want to keep on some weight for breastfeeding. I figure by then I can fit into my 12s and into my favorite jeans.
Overall, you should talk with your doctor. One thing I didn't like about the first doctor is that she really didn't talk about things like nutrition, smoking, drinking, etc. She asked if I smoked and if I was eating well, but that's it. Eh.

Certain fishes (def not sushi!), shellfish too. Some fishes have higher mercury counts than others. Although a midwife at my doctor's office told me all fish is ok in moderation (2 servings a wk). Not sure if I totally believe that one. No fake sugars so watch those flavored waters if you like them-most are sweetened with the bad sugars. You can have honey. Honey shouldn't be given to children under 2 I believe but it's ok for pregnant women. I put it in my tea a lot. My girl is totally healthy. Check all foods you buy to make sure abt the sugars. Also, you can only have pasteurized cheeses (cannot have brie or feta or I believe even blue cheeses). Lunch meat isn't good to eat either although I've had it on occasion. Doc said it was fine. The less caffeine the better. Drink lots of water! Congrats and good luck!

Probably for now....take a few snacks with you and eat every few hours. Its a good way to keep morning sickness at bay.
Try some protein snacks if they dont make you sick, have them handy....I lived on Almonds my first pregnancy for at least 2 months.

If your full then your full.. pregnant or not. Just b/c your pregnant doesn't mean you have to eat for two.

Listen to your body.
Listen to your cravings.
Pay attention to your weight gain.
It's actually normal to lose a little weight early on due to nausia. It's also normal to not necessarily have a huge appetite early one if you're not feeling well.

Sure....just don't make it the only meal of the day. Follow what your body is telling you, if your full, then your full.
