background laughing in "friends" real people?

do they modify the laughs and generate sounds or is it just naturally recorded?

Friends is or ( was ) shot in front of a live studio audience, so the laughter should be real, they might add some if the reactions were not as they'd hoped, but it should all be real people.. I saw the set and where the audience sits on the WB studio tour some years ago..
