The term "cell phone" is used because the communication technology is "cellular" -- a given service area is subdivided into units called cells because, on maps, they are hexagonal, and resemble the cells in a beehive. (The hexagon is the regular polyhedron that most efficiently covers a given space.) Each cell is serviced by a single antenna (usually called a cell tower).
