One theory is that the majority of the water came later, brought by comets. Comets are mostly ice, and over time numerous cometary collisions could have brought enough water to earth to create the oceans. That might sound like a lot of water considering that comets are relatively small and such impacts are rare, but earth has been around for over 4 billion years so that adds up.

Evolutionists have all sorts of problems about the alleged make up of the early earth.
Why do you think the earth was hot in the beginning? Was anyone there? Do you have any evidence to support this idea?
Of course you don't. All ideas about the origin of the earth are based on faith - creationists and evolutionists alike.
But there was one eye-witness and He has given us his account in Genesis.
If you acknowledge for a moment that evolutionists believe in the Big Bang by faith, then you might be surprised by how well the evidence is explained by a creationist viewpoint.
What we see is just what we would expect to see given the account in Genesis. Was it made up after the event to fit the evidence? Or is it true?
Look carefully at what evolutionists and creationists assume, and whether their arguments withstand scrutiny.
Look here for some of the problems with the Big Bang that evolutionists often don't like to talk about - at least not in front of creationists :)

How anyone can seriously suggest that the water got here from comets is beyond belief! how much water do you think is in a comet? And how much water is on earth! You would need billions and billions of comets. Ridiculous. But shows what fairy tales evolutionists will believe instead of considering creation!

Either the water was all in the atmosphere in gaseous form, waiting to precipitate when the Earth cooled, or it came later as impacting comets.
