There are several things you can do to increase the "speed" of your computer.
1) Clean up the disk. Uninstall unneeded programs (especially those that run at startup and/or put something in the system tray), run Disk Cleanup, and defragment the drive. This is a good first step that will almost always take a few seconds off boot time and application loads for any computer.
2) Stomp auto-starting programs. Click Start > Run and type "msconfig" at the prompt. Click the Startup tab and look at all that junk that loads when you launch your PC. Do you really need "Adobe Reader Speed Launch"? Probably not. Turn off anything else that looks useless, but be careful not to disable your anti-virus and important system components.
3) Run a full anti-virus and anti-spyware scan. I would recommend using AVG Free Anti-virus, Spybot - Search and Destroy spyware remover and Ad-aware spyware remover. These programs are all free.
4) Clean up the registry. CCleaner, available at http://www.ccleaner.com is free and worth running. It will also remove unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.
Those are the easy and free things you can do. If your computer is still slow you need to move on to the bigger guns.
1) Upgrade RAM. This is the one killer trick that will make almost any computer run faster. With an older PC, you will rarely have enough RAM to run today's memory-hogging operating systems and applications, and adding a high-capacity stick or two of quality RAM will give you a quick speed boost. Adding RAM is fairly simple, even for a novice, and you should be able to do the job in 5 or 10 minutes. You can run a free test at http://www.crucial.com and find out what kind of RAM (memory) your computer needs.
2) Reinstall Windows. If the above tricks haven't helped, it may be time to wipe the slate clean and start again, reformatting your hard drive, reinstalling your applications, and restoring your data files from a backup. You'd be surprised how much more responsive a freshly reinstalled Windows system can be, as you've wiped out years of temp files, garbled registry entries, old versions of software programs that have been upgraded repeatedly, and all sorts of other electronic junk. Reinstalling is easy if you have the "recovery disk" that came with your PC, and only a bit more involved if you're using a retail copy of Windows XP. Just be sure you back up everything you want to take with you before you pull the trigger!
3) Upgrade your hard drive. This is a more complicated solution, but if you're reinstalling Windows (per the prior tip) you might consider upgrading to a bigger and possibly faster hard drive, too. Hard disk storage is a performance bottleneck on every machine, and magnetic disks degrade over time. Some performance issues could be caused by a failing hard drive, even, and upgrading to a new model could really put some zip back in your system. As a bonus, you can use the original hard drive for backups or occasional storage, if you put it in an enclosure....and download these tools http://en.sergiwa.com/modules/news/

There are plenty of manners of increasing the speed of the computer. The first, and best, is to update the computer components, specially the RAM. Increasing the memory might do the job most of the times, unless you are having problems with video card, or may be the hard disk is too slow, etc.
If cant offer, or may be dont want to, the cost of updating your PC the solution is playing around the comuter's configuration.
if you are using Windows Xp remove all the fancy graphic that come this system. Change the system's theme from the Windows XP theme to the Classic one. Remove the screensaver. Remove the "on start" programs that you might not need immediately after starting the PC. For this last advice you can use a program called "CCleaner". It is easy, straight forward and help with the problem.
You may also deactivate some service program that Windows uses in the background and that are necessary all the time. To deactivate them, unless you are a pro in this, I recommend to use the following program; "XP-Antispy". It deactivate, not only Windows services that consume resources for the sake of it, but also all Windows Media Player services that launch in the background when connecting to internet, they consume as well.
Hope I helped!

You can optimise the performance by only running programs you are using, increasing memory (RAM) is always a good idea, but if your processor is an old one and therefore slow there is not much you can do. You would need to give more information about your computer. Right click on the "My Computer" icon and click "Properties" then the "General" tab will give you information about your computer(processor speed and amount of installed RAM). If you do not know what you are doing it is probably not a good idea to change any of the settings without getting advice.

1. delete all the temporary files. run > %temp% > delete all the files. 2. only install those softwares which are required 3. do not store any personal or other matter on the C drive. 4. Do not store too many files on your desktop. 5. Remove the unwanted start up files. run > msconfig > start up > deselect the unwanted. 6. Full Scan your computer every week to Keep it free of virus. For that you need to have a full/licensed version of a good anti virus. 7. Increase the speed of RAM Have a 1GB DDR RAM atleast. 8. Defragment the disks. start > All programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. 9. Do not open too many pages/ files at the same time.

If you can not upgrade processor and motherboard, then you are stuck with the cheaper methods.
First is ram, more is ususally better and adds some speed as more can be in live memory.
Second is optimization of software and operating system.
If using windows you can make the swap file a permanent size rather than let windows auto adjust (stops windows from wasting processor time to do the adjusting), next optimize the hard drive so programs are first and data is further on the hard drive.
Then remove all unnecessary items from loading on startup. Basically run as clean and lean as possible. If it is not necessary for operating and can be run on demand, then do that rather than have it in the background. Remove all unnecessary icons from the desktop etc (less to load).
Otherwise switch to linux as it runs faster and uses all ram and processor properly. Bit of learning to operate the programs but it is much faster (I used it on a 350Mhz pentium and it ran as fast as a 733Mhz unit running windows and for some stuff faster).

FIRST MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO REGULAR THINGS LIKE DEFRAGMENT, VIRUS,SPYWARE,ADWARE ( ETC ) CHECKS. THE SECOND THING I WOULD DO IS CHECK TO SEE IF I COULD STOP ANY UNNECESSARY PROGRAMS . THEN HOW MUCH MEMORY I HAD AND THE SIZE OF PAGE FILE. YOUR SYSTEM HELP AND SUPPORT SHOULD GIVE YOU SOME INFO ON HOW TO DO AND WHAT SIZE IT SHOULD BE. IF YOU NEED SPEED FOR GAMES THEN FIRST IT WOULD BE WHAT IS YOUR PROCESSOR SPEED. NEW GAMES NEED FAST PROCESSORS. THEN I WOULD LOOK AT MY GRAPHICS CARD AND SEE IF IT IS WORTH BUYING A NEW ONE. ALL OF THIS INFO IS ON THE NET IF YOU NEED HELP.

Add RAM, defrag monthly, Ad-aware monthly, Win-patrol daily. Don't install all the toolbars that companies like Yahoo offer, they just take up resources.

if its a laptop or PC you can just go to best buy or something like that and buy extra ram.. you can get them at between 500 mb up to i think 2 gigs of ram, you can either install it yourself of they will do it for you for a small fee of course...
