I dont think that because she wants to hyphenate her last name should have anything to do with her worth as a person . Grow up !!!

What does the name have to do with someone you supposedly love. She is proud of her last name, just like you are. She has the perfect right to ask for that if it's something she wants. Many do have their last names hyphenated. Just like many countries the wife does not change her maiden name to match her husband. Its a union of two families.

I am going to level with you.
Every "hyphenated" women I've ever met or worked with has been crazier than a sh*thouse rat.
I kid you not.
People here say you are being petty - if it's such a little thing, then why will she demand to the death her right to do it? This is *not* a little thing.
Run for your life - you have been warned.

Changing the name is an old tradition from patriarchal times. In the 21st century where men and women are equal, how would you feel if she asks you to change your name instead? and if she thinks you are not worth marrying if you refuse to change your name to hers...

Marry her. I never asked my wife to take my last name. All her official documents use her maidren name. She is still my wife. Recently, the past 5-6 years she has been adding my last name preceded by "de" ---calling herself Hot Little Redhead de Bassmeister.
Do you love her or what she calls herself?

If you love her, she's worth marrying.
Maybe you could just take her name, then she wouldn't have to hyphenate hers....

Has she given reasons as to why she wants to? I took my husband's name but I can see why someone might not want to; they feel as if their identity is compromised, they have an established reputation with their maiden name, or they just don't feel that is a worthwhile tradition (afterall, why is something o.k. just because people say it is).

Probably not.
That hyphenation thing is SO pretentious.
Besides a woman who is not willing to give up her daddy's name for her husbands is not ready to be married except to her own independence. Not a good sign.

Not if it's important to you that she take your last name.
