I'm going to play devil's advocate here...
I think that Matt Lauer is probably a highly intelligent, although occasionally misguided, man, who has a very nice job anchoring the Today Show ever since Brainless Gumball left to pursue a career as a sportscaster (and arguably the worst one in the history of mankind).
However, I think that NBC is intentional about making him appear "glib" (yes, I had to look up the definition of that word before I could be comfortable using it). When one has to take countless news stories and condense them into 15-or-30-second pieces, one appears to be glib. I think, personally, that NBC (and all other media) have an agenda they're touting, and when a story doesn't fit with their agenda, it gets "glibberized." (I'm not faulting the media...clearly if I owned access to eyes and ears like the media does, I'd tout my own agenda, to be sure.)
I don't think Matt Lauer is glib, but I think he's directed to appear that way at times.
That doesn't excuse Tom Cruise's being an @$$. Poor Katie.

woah, the guy above me sure wrote a lot... I was just going to say yes, though sometimes it seems as if he is trying to hard on topics/interviews that don't seem so important, which leads to others not giving him respect...
