The u-bend stops waste water flowing back into the washing machine, so yes, its pretty important.

You should be able to get a replacement from any good plumbers merchant - take another fitting along or measure the size of the hole first.

You still need some pipe to connect to your waste water system, a u-bend will trap a small amount of water that will prevent sewer fumes finding their way into your hose through this connection unless the air pressure in the waste system is significantly greater than the air pressure in your house.
It will not prevent liquids from flowing back up the pipe, you would need a shut off valve for that!

There are 2 possible U bends. One on the flexible waste hose from the machine which creates a rigid shape to the hose. This is to hold the hose up and over and prevent water from siphoning back. The other is at the foot of the standpipe that the flexi hose drains into (if it doesn't connect to the sink waste). This one traps a little water in it to prevent drain smells from coming back into the house.

The plastic "u" piece is fitted to the washing machine waste pipe, so that you can hang the waste pipe over the edge of the sink. In most cases the waste is plumbed into the sink waste pipe. So, if yours is not plumbed in then you have to hang it over the edge of the sink, it would be best to get one. It is nothing to do with smells coming back, purely a method of trying to insure the hose stays in position while the machine empties. Best of luck.

The machine will still work properly. The 'U' is just to help hang the hose into the drain pipe. You have not lost any function of the machine.
