because the judge says the girl probably concented, my questions are these....
aside from the men being jailed for life at the very least, should the judge recieve a heavy sentence too?
and why does something like this only get a 3 minute slot near the end of the news hour (sky news) when some prick who pulled an insurance scam gets nearly a week of continual coverage?

Gang rape fallout
Updated: 22:02, Thursday December 13, 2007
Police in Queensland are resisting pressure for a major operation on Cape York, to crack down on child sexual abuse.
There's been widespread outrage over the case of 9 men, who escaped jail time for the gang rape of a 10 year old girl.
The incident has led to numerous calls for intervention, including an extension of the operation currently underway in the Northern Territory.
Noel Pearson from the Cape York Land Council, says the case of the 10 year old girl is just the tip of the iceberg.

Mr Pearson says many more at-risk children need to be taken from their families, and governments need to stop being fearful of creating another stolen generation.
'We have got to shed any hesitation whatsoever, about the notion that we should take children away from abusive situations and place them into foster care whether it be Aboriginal families or European families. There's absolutely no justification for leniency,' he told ABC television.
'In fact, part of the whole social and cultural breakdown that we see in our communities is the consequence of courts taking into account the historical and social background of Aboriginal offenders.'

the judge should be jailed for life as well!! It's a kid, for christ's sake! a young girl who was brutally abused by 10 men... that's so sick! I've got a niece her age and I can imagine the pain and suffering of the girl as well as her family's

Where did this happen? A ten year old can't give consent. If this happened, something else out to be done to the unjust judge and the men. It's sad but unfortunately these kinds of examples of moral decay are becoming par for the course. A woman in Cincinnati left her child to broil to death in her car and was not even charged (eventhough she was a teacher, principal and had been indoctrinated under Bush's "No Child Left Behind" policy for the past six years). I think when the prosecutor and detectives found out she bought 7 dozen doughnuts, a tear fell their eye - "She's one of us," they must have said to themselves. Weather dominates most broadcast TV news. We're at the point where news anchors might as well be replaced by fortune tellers; they'd be more entertaining.

To the people who talk about rehabilitation, that is for drug users, alcoholics, burglars maybe. But not in any way shape or form murderers, rapists or scum like this. People like that who spout rubbish like rehabilitation all the time are failing in the duty to protect the public. The law abiding publics rights should come before that of a criminal. When will people learn that vengeance should be part of a fair justice system? When horriffic crimes like this are committed, retribution should be applied on the perpetrators. I wonder if the young girls family would have talked about rehabilitation? Or would they instead have them all beaten to a pulp, gang raped and disfigured with caustic soda themselves before locking them away? Exactly. It is no more than what they inflicted on this young girl, and it is no less than what these scumbags deserve. Apologies for the rant, I tried to be as polite as possible. Very emotive subject.

At first this does seem to be absolutely disgusting, however you need to take into account the difference in culture.
What is wrong to us in a Western christian culture may be normal to others.
Take for example what happened on Pitcairn island a few years back. Horrible and inconceivable to us, however to the islanders there was nothing wrong in it. In tribal community across the world young girls and boys have sex at a much younger age than we consider to be correct. That doesn't make it wrong, just different.
I understand that I will get a lot of thumbs down on this one and I am not saying that I think sex at this age is right. What I am saying is that you should not judge others just by your own values. That line of thinking has caused many of the worlds problems.

A nine year old is not able to give consent. End of. The 9 people involved should have faced justice.
For those with a detailed understanding of Australian Aboriginal conditions (as I have growing up in the most densely populated territory in Australia when it comes to Aboriginal population ratio) I can tell you this thing occurs far more often than is being reported and is often being hushed up by the local community.

My god i haven't heard this but it truly discussing! why would a ten year old even agree to have sex with one man instead of nine! apauling! These animals should have got a life sentence, for the life they robbed from this poor little girl.
There should be a appeal and these men should be put on the sex offenders list BUT what i would do to them would be much more brutal and i would probably be arrested for my actions.
We live in a horrible strange world and somethings we cannot change. Sad times.

Well, I heard of it on C5 news, but it was at the end of the programme, but that is down to the fact that it occurred in Australia, of course our news comes first.
The furore over there is because she is Aboriginal, and therefore they see it as not equal to the sentence a white victim would ensure.
The Prime minister is calling for it to be reviewed, so I think you will see those sentences changed.

From what i read above, the sentences will be reviewed & hopefully made heavier. Animals like these should have no place in society. I agree that the Judge should be sentenced as well.
Its a sad world we live in when a little child is brutalised & gets no justice because of the colour of her skin.

I don't know if Australia has the same double jeopardy protection as the US and Canada. From what I have read a new trial will be order or the sentence reviewed at the very least.

The judge was a woman. She will not be allowed to officiate at a high court trial again. Australia's top politicians are involved and unhappy so really the judge will find it hard to defend her position.
