An engine can get pretty hot and not damage anything. When it got hot, was it making a pinging noise when you accellerated? If so, that's pretty hot but doesn't mean anything is damaged. It it got hot enough to cause damage, either the engine will be locked up, which it's not, or the pistons and cylinder walls may be scored (scratched up). However, that's not enough to stop it from running and if it is, it would use oil and possibably make knocking sounds, especially after more driving use.

How did it get hot? Just from setting in traffic? Drain plug in the radiator pop out (I had that happen twice on a Ford), you didn't know it and ran it? If so and if the engine stopped running by itself, then you may have problems. Personally I'd suspect something else at this point.

A Compression Test Will answer your questions, most likely the motor is severely damaged.
