war between Russia and Afghanistan occurred because Russia was seeking to expand the borders; also, this was a situation like the Korean or Vietnam war, when the Russians and Americans could not directly fight, so used third parties to do the fighting. Russia is a developed nation in the sense that it has nuclear resources, a better term may be developing, as the infrastructure still is quite bad, though industrialism is starting to thrive nicely. At present relations between US and Russia are a bit frosty, with the increasing power of Putin, and US disapproval of it, as well as Russia's support of Iran, which is completely against US policies with Iran.

since about 1740, Russia has been trying to expand it's Empire to SOMEWHERE in the world where it has a year round open ocean port that doesn't freeze over in the winter. It has been a constant aim of Russia whether ruled by a Czar or a Commissar or a General Secretary or a President the last 250 years.
In the 1840's-1870's Russia and England engaged in a series of maneuverings and wars fought by their proxies in the Afghan /Punjab / North India area known as "The Great Game"; so Russia's interest in conquering Afghanistan is nothing new.
Their long range plan in the 70's was to be able to expand their influence down thru Afghanistan to western Iran and then to the Persian Gulf, giving them a year round port and access to all that Persian Gulf oil.

In February 1979, the Shah of Iran was toppled by an Islamic Revolution, which Russia immediately interpreted as an event that would spur the US to give a military response, because the Shah was a puppet government placed by the US. Russia mobilized their military into Afghanistan, which is just north of Iran, so that they would be in position to counter any US military moves into Iran. The US didn't budge, and the Russians got stuck with trying to hold Afghanistan for nine years. They held their position so long because they believed the Americans will eventually make a military move into the middle east. They were partially right, we just didn't make our move till August 1990 to launch Desert Shield (liberate Kuwait from Sadam Hussein). By then, the Russians had fully withdrawn from Afghanistan, having tasted their version of the Vietnam War.

It took TWO different Afghan presidents over a period of years to beg the USSR for assistance to combat insurgence (a rebellion against the government). The USSR was hesitant but finally accepted. The USSR became involved to support the government.
This, however, led to religious fanatics from all over the region to funnel into Afghanistan. But what was worse was that Britain, France, West Germany, and the U.S. sent military equipment and money to finance these fanatics (Taliban) in order to overpower the USSR forces.
The USSR succeeded in stabilizing the government, but Afghanistan was ruined and littered with rebels. The USSR removed their forces… but the government did fall after.

enable me initiate off by utilising asserting that i'm an particularly proud American,in simple terms no longer a brilliant fan of distant places coverage. america could have accomplished a similar precise ingredient if it had individuals in yet another u . s .,and that they could have been subjected to ths style of attack by utilising any government....... The U.S. could react a similar way as Russia if Russia could installation a preserve in Cuba or Venezuela. Come on adult men,Russia needs to regulate the area,in simple terms like the U.S. tries to do right here in u.s. (and that i mean the continent). in any case,if Georgia needs its territory and individuals to be area of their mainland lower back, why launch an attack that leaves a capital in ruins, and kills over 1000 civilians and 10-20 russian peace keepers???? Thats replaced into basically a stupid flow, which the US and Europe instructed Georgia to no longer DO!!! I in simple terms desire we help Georgia get lower back on aim economically, yet forget approximately those 2 states, they are long gone....because of the fact of a miscalculated protection stress flow by utilising their area,so get the scope out of Russia, placed it on Georgia.
