The United States is made up of 50 states. Hawaii was last to join the Union, doing so on August 21, 1959.

Depending how things are listed (especially in an online pull-down menu), it may seem like there are 51 states, as there are normally 51 options for the "state" category when entering a U.S. address. The 51st option is the District of Columbia (DC).

The District has the same boundaries as Washington, and was designed as a federal district so that the national capital would not be part of any state. Residents of Washington, DC can vote for president (they get 3 electoral votes, same as the smallest states), but they are not represented in the Senate or the House of Representatives (as they are not a state).

There are only 50 states in the U.S., not 51. Whatever says that is so wrong.

I feel sorry for your kid. And for everyone who doesn't realize it was a sad attempt at political humor.

Depending on where you are from it can be Australia, UK, Canada, Mexico .... very few places are untouched by American colonialism - cultural, political or commercially.
