William HANNA and Joseph BARBERA were working at MGM making cartoons. One day they decided to pool their talents together and make their own cartoon....the result was "Puss Gets The Boot" starring Jasper the cat and Jinks the mouse. The cat and mouse were renamed Tom and Jerry by a secretary at MGM who won a contest.

Fred Quimby was the 'producer' of the cartoons...but he was only head of the animation department at MGM and had little to do with and little interest in the making of the cartoons...but when Hanna-Barbera won 8 Oscars for Tom and Jerry cartoons...he took interest and decided to keep their Oscars because he was the 'producer'.

William Hanna and Joseph Barbera were fired by MGM in the mid 50s when the animation department closed down. They started their own studio and made some of the greatest cartoons for television. Including Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear, The Flintstones, The Jetsons and Scooby-Doo.
