Advantages of a laptop over ordinary desktop PC are:

- Portability. You can bring your work/games everywhere!
- Power -- Laptops draw a lot less power than desktops.

Disadvantages:
- A bit more expensive (though the difference isn't as much anymore)
- Smaller screen
- More cramped keyboard
- Expensive add-ons

Given the disadvantages, the advantage of being able to use your computer anywhere you go (couch, bathroom, work, school, etc.) far outweigh the disadvantages.

As for getting connected to the internet, you would use the same means as you would for a desktop. You can either go wireless (would require a wireless router, and a broadband connection), directly plug into the broadband modem, or connect to the phone line using the basic dial-up modem.

Configuration to get on the internet is fairly straight forward, depending on what laptop you go with. Its usually as simple as clicking one button, and you're online.

Also, if you're not sure which laptop to get, Dell is cheap, HP is getting better, ASUS laptops are nice but expensive, and Lenovo Thinkpads are the most well-built.

Good luck!

Advantages
Portability.
You can easily move around with your laptop as opposed to the bulky Desktops

Add ons
Most laptops are now containing most add ons that previously you had to buy seperately and install in Pcs like wireless connectors and bluetooth

Desk space
They take very little of your desk space.

To connect your laptop to the internet you must first have the internet facility within your home, office or where you are. This would mean contacting the local Internet Service Provider (ISP) They will give you some IP configurations that you must set in order to access the service plus the charges for the service. You then need to seek the services of a network expaert in your area to do some networking in your house or the office- if you will be using cables. If you have wireless connection, then it will save you the agony of cabling work. I guess the laptop you intend to use will already have wireless adapter so you only require the IP settings to go through

The most obvious advantage is the flexibility to take it where you want. Just one tip, make sure you get a cordless mouse and switch off the touchpad on your laptop - otherwise the cursor jumps all over the place & believe me, it is really annoying. I'm not quite sure about the second part of your question. If you live in Australia, ring any of the major telco's and ask for wi-fi broadband, that way you can use the laptop in any room in your house or even from the yard. I have a laptop only, and am more than satisfied.

The only advantage that Laptops have over PC is that they are portable. Besides this, expect to pay more for the same functinoality. To get on line, it is pretty much the same way as a PC. Some Laptops have have ethernet built it but if not, get a card, plug in your high speed internet and off you go. Some Laptops have Wi-Fi built in. Find a hot spot and there you go.

Just bought a Dell 1501 inspiron in the last year. This is my first laptop. Was a little skeptical at first but will never go back to a desktop. Its portable, you can do the same stuff. Getting connected is not hard get it set up with a wifi card and possible cell phone card (mine is set up for both). There are enough wireless networks available now that I dont even pay for internet service anymore. Not reccommended to go that way. But they are Awesome

Well the only advantage is the size weight and portability. The disadvantage is the fact that you pay more for less. Since the components are so much smaller they always cost more are less upgradable. Unless you really need a laptop for business or travel I would go with the desktop 100%

Laptops are the way to go anymore. You get more for your money. One can always add a second screen if you need it.

The advantages are this:

You get the same computing power in a smaller footprint.
It is portable.
You can take it anywhere you feel safe doing so.
Tech Support is Top Notch.

I recommend you get either a Toshiba or HP laptop. They really rock. In other words, they are worth the money.

I've bee using a Toshiba Satellite for almost 2 years now without a problem. All I need to do is upgrade my RAM memory......
